I have a 56 and 57 lower unit, does the bronze sleeve bearing just below
the water pump just ride free in the lower lower unit casting? or is it supposed to be a tight press fit into the housing?both the lowers I have the sleeve is just floating in there. not sloppy out of round. but will move up and down. sorry these are off of a 30 and 35 evinrude 1956 and 1957

As far as the ones I've worked on, it was a tight press fit. I don't know if up or down would be a problem as much as side to side slop. It's very strange to me that they are loose. They usually are almost impossible to get out.

If you mean the bushing that holds the driveshaft seal, it should be a tight fit or water will get into the lower unit.
