Hello,
I was wondering how important it was to replace the water pump while I have the motor all torn down and off the lower unit. I am not even positive how to get to it, so if it is necessary please give me a little help.

Also, the 7 of the 29 needle bearings in one of the connecting rods have some mild pitting on them. I called a local shop and they said considering the age, it was probably ok. Are replacements neccessary or even available?

The water pump is in the lower unit in the bulge above the anti cav. plate and if you dont know the history replace it, it is pretty straight forward, with a service manual. You should be working with a manual anyway.I hate to say it
but I would probably run the bearings assuming
it really is minor pitting.A good sound fit is probably more important.
The Antique Outboard Motor Club at:
www.aomci.org can probably tell you if there are any bearings out there or what to do if not.

if you decide to try to replace the bearings, the good news is they can be found. you might try featherweightoutboards.com. On ocassion, i've had luck using a local machine shop/supply house. just miced the bearings for demensions, brought them with to double-re-comfirm and,...ta-da. REPLACEMENTS! a bunch cheaper the oem package (about $80 for 20 omc rollers & keeper)

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!
