I have a 56 30hp model 25924 big twin. I was running it in a tub of water to test the engine electrical issues Ii fixed and noticed a lot of oil in the water! Nasty oil slick coated the entire surface of the tub (1/2 55gal plastic drum) pulled from the water, cleaned the motor with automotive engine de-greaser expecting to see where the oil i leaking out. Nothing seems to be leaking. Could a leak develop internally and exit the exhaust or water ports? There is a nipple of sorts on the starboard side just under the power head with a oil stain running down the outside of the motor. I cant find this on any engine diagrams that I have. Could this be my leak? It does seem to be too high up to be gear oil. Real confused here. Any one familiar with this engine give me some pointers?

With that older engine with it's fuel-oil mix, it will throw a lot of unburned fuel, and oil into the water. What you are seeing is normal.

WOW! I bet the EPA has a field day on this.
Would it be advisable to run 32:1 mixture and would that reduce the slick?

Use 24:1 and use TCW-3 synthetic oil.

They run real dirty in a barrel or tub...so it's normal. On the water, with synthetic oil in the mix, they run cleaner and the residue they leave evaporates from the water. 24:1 is recommended for your 56 with regular unleaded gas. Check the LU for lube condition since you have run it in the barrel/water...if it's like vanilla milkshake you may need to replace the LU seals. A lot of the info in the Top Secret file at the top of this forum applies to your outboard.

24;1, 30 weight, non detergent automotive oil, or Mobile outboard oil is recommended. I have no idea what would happen with modern oil. I would stick with the manufacture's recommendation.

Nipple of sorts below the powerhead. I believe you are speaking of the grease fitting for the gearshift. The seal on the shifter shaft is probably shot, allowing exhaust residue to escape out through the grease fitting. It is the same gunk that is going out the exhaust into the water anyway.

ALL two stroke outboards discharge oil. Some much more than others. Yours is one of the "much more" ones. And the confines of a barrel make it appear to be much worse than it actually is. It won't look like that on the lake.

100% Synthetic TCW-3 outboard oil (Penzoil) will smoke less and create less oil slick on the water. That's all I use since I proved it to my own satisfaction. They claim it is bio-degradeable too.

just a note on that, bio degradeable doesnot mean safe for the environment just means it can be broken down by other organisms. still pollutes.
