Anybody point me towards a part list for a 56' Seahorse 30, and maybe where to get the parts. I know I'm in need of gears as it has started to buck and little bit under power (just at the high end though) and is starting to slip. :( A general parts list would be nice as to maybe replace a few odds and ends if they are still around. Thanks for the help.

they're still around. placing a free classified ad at aomci.org is your best bet for a set of used lower unit gears or even better, a whole used lower unit. The askamember section is awesome, too. ebay can sometimes be a good source for parts but I'd trust the aomci members to take care of me much more than an "ebayer".. laings.outboards is one of my favorite sources and the guy that answers the phone is helpful, knowledgeable, and responsible. ships fast unless parts on backorder. I don't have a parts list for a '56 30hp., myself.
Seaway marine on the internet I hear is good, too for parts but I've never used them.
Original repro. decals, tiller grips, and some other parts for good buying or just lurking is nymarine.ca who also has original paint colors which are high but worth it. The guy there is reliable and helpful, too. Iboats has coils and such for your motor for a reasonable price.
--I hope you're using 24:1 fuel/oil mix!;)
Nice motor!

Is it kickiing in gear when you apply the throttle? If it is, its almost 100 percent the clutch dog.Ijust replaced one on a 56 30 hp seahorse ,got it at the local brp dealer(ordered).Ive put it in and the motor runs nice and smooth now!Sorry i cnt remember the price at this moment but i will check and see if i can find it and the number of the part.

I have the parts manual for the '56 Javelin 30hp which is almost identical, just trim stuff is different I believe. Send me a PM with your email address and I will email it to you.

Thanks JBJ: for all the leads.

56 rude: the gears seam to skip under power, The motor is strong and doesn't miss, but you feel this lunge like it skipped out of gear and then jumped right back in( it happens fast though), it happens under a load at high throttle, but it is not consistant or in a rythem just happens some of the time and if you back down a little bit from full or almost full throttle it goes away.

Thanks samo ott: PM on the way, thanks

Also I believe I read somewhere that the 30HP seahorse was only made in '56 is this right? And if so are there other models in that time frame that would have parts that fit. Like the 56' Javilen 30hp.

Check the adjustments to your shift linkage and check for slop, before you tear it down. A lot of people tear these down where there isn't a need.

That is correct. In '55 it was a 25hp and in '57, '58 and '59 it was a 35hp. Then in '60 it went to a 40hp. The 57's and 58's are very close to the '56 30hp.

yea, the standard shift models were pretty identical up to like 1962? However, the water pump system changed in 1958 and had a two water tubes going to the powerhead.

Re: 56' Seahorse 30 needs parts

Sounds like early stages of clutch dog failure. Some folks open the LU/gearcase and find the clutch dog worn on one end (the ears)...you can turn the dog around and get more use from it, but this moves the kicking problem to reverse gear. The guys on the Ask A Member board at www.aomci.org can tell you if the clutch dogs are the same for the 30 and 35hp OMC's of the era. I replaced the clutch dog recently in my 57 E-rude BigTwin 35hp and ordered the clutch dog by the parts number in a parts list. Turned out to be wrong because someone before me had either changed the prop shaft or full gears in the lower unit. Luckily, found the right replacement...but had to send a photo of the old dog to ensure getting the right replacement. All this said to let you know it's not hard to replace, but may take some patience.
