I have a question concerning Re-assebly of waterpump.Should a sealer (Perfect Seal or Gasket Sealer(Cement)) be used under the bottom plate to lower unit and on the housing surfaces ?There is no gaskets here and my manual does not mention using any sealer at all for this model(25930)
Thanks Jim

Yes, you do put sealant there. Between the upper machined surfaces of the lu and the stainless steel wear plate. My manuals all indicate 1000 sealer being used for this application, so use a similair product.

I'm surprised that's not in your manual. You might want to pencil that it.

I've never put any sealer and I've never seen any sealer residue under the plate before during dissasembly....but maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the info, but now I'm confused.I have one yes and one no.In addition the LU in question had no sealant on the water pump, however a LU from a early 60's 28hp i disassembled did.I guess it couldn't hurt to put it there

I have an OEM 28hp manual, and it doesn't indicate any sealant between the pump body and the wear plate. Just the wear plate to LU. If you seal down the pump body, make sure the impeller doesn't see any of the sealant!
Use some sealant on your pump's screw threads though, it will aid in their removal later.

Go figure,as for manuals I have a Johnson Master manual from 192? to 1964 and it is hit or miss on some topics.I am going to pick up a Seloc,I hear these are the best for this motor.Any opinions?

Actually, I've never seen it on one I've dissasembled either, but here it is all through the manuals. I suspect this doesn't matter a bit, if the pump's body is at or below the water surface at idle. But, in the case of Big Twins anyway, there's quite a distance between the side plate/screen and the level of the water pump. And if your waterline was above the ventilated side plate but below the pump body, the pump would suck air through the leaking wear plate. This would not be a problem at throttle since water is being crammed up through the intake by the prop.

Just a theory anyway.

EDIT: Best are the OEM manuals. I like my Seloc one too. Actually best is having both! :)

I never seal them. I'm afraid of that stuff getting into things that will cause problems.

Thermostat(s), etc.

This is a good question. To seal or not to seal. My opinion/what I do....I use a little under the wear plate. Helps keep corrosion from working on the two dissimular metals, the aluminum side. I don't use sealer under the impeller housing unless there is an o-ring there and only sparingly at that. Just enough to hold the o-ring in.

The recommandation for my '57 seahorse is to use "omc gasket sealant" the goopie brown stuff that never dries out.this engine is the same as yours

Thanks to all,I think I will use some gasket sealer on the wear plate and LU surfaces and use it very sparingly on the Impeller housing.
