Hi I'm replacing my ignition system and plug wires on my 57 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin and I'm having trouble getting the old wires out. I have taken out one coil to see that the wire's shot. I'm just wondering if there's a easy was to get these out. The wire brackets are on the bottom of the coil assembly plate and are a pain to get to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are four screws that hold the magneto plate on the engine- two long ones that go through the coils laminates, and two more kinda nestled down low on the same bolt circle. Once they're loose, the whole plate simply lifts off, and the clamp screws are easy to get to. If your wires are bad, the coils may be too. Old OMC coils tend to crack. Replacements are readily available.

Once the wires are unclamped as explained above, they merely pull out of the coils. If the coil breaks, it was shot anyway.
