Hello All,

I have a been trying to get my 57 Evinrude 7.5 to run, I had it started but it only runs for a short while and dies, it would not stay at idle speed either it would run very choppy then die.

I changed the spark plugs due to oil being on the plugs and the gap was off so I re-gapped them at .030. Rebuilt the fly wheel and replaced the spring.

Now the motor will not even turn at all. I have taken the carb apart, when doing that I took the high speed knob out and the low speed knob out, a lot of oil and gas came out holes, why is this?? And why is there oil on the plugs.

The other issue I have is this motor did not come with a pressurized fuel tank, CAN THIS MOTOR RUN WITHOUT ONE??? I do not think the 57 7.5 has a fuel pump does it? If I need one where do I get one or can I put a fuel pump on.

Please, I need some good advice, I thank you in advance.

Re: 57 Evinrude 7.5 NEED HELP!

If you remove the needle valves, fuel is SUPPOSED to dribble out, or at least for the high speed one, as it is a direct path to the carburetor bowl.

Do you have spark? Have you checked the condition of the coils and points? What is compression readings?

And yes, you need a pressure tank for that motor. Not uncommon and fairly easy to find if you look. Rebuild kits are readily available for them, too.

For testing purposes, it is possible to set-up a gravity feed directly to the carburetor to test-run the motor.

How do I ckeck to see if i have a spark?
How do i check the coils and points?

Sorry i am new to this but want to try and make it work on my own.

Since there was not filter in the carb could this create a problem?

Thanks for your help!

There should be a ceramic filter in the glass bowl in the bottom of the carburator. Motor will run without the filter, but not recommended.

If the bowl filter is not there just install a inline filter until you can find one they show up on Ebay sometime's the bowl and all.

So how did you get it to run at all without a tank? That motor has no fuel pump and won't run without a pressure tank.

Don't even waste your time until you remove the flywheel and check the coils. Your plugs are probably wet because you don't have enough spark to fire them. That motor needs to throw a spark across at least a 3/16" open air gap. Sparking across the plug gap in open air is a quick test, but fairly useless.

You need a repair manual because you obviously know nothing about what you are doing. That is not meant to be an insult, just good advice. Messing around with stuff that might not be in need of repair is only causing more problems. And failing to do things correctly, such as removing and reinstalling the flywheel can cause irrepairable damage.

Do it right and do it once and you will succeed.
