1957 evinrude/Johnson 35hp I've been having issues with ( lean sneezes) lately turned out I dropped a cylinder. Ordered coils and wires since it was getting fuel and running 120 psi compression on both cylinders. It was the lower cylinder I pulled the flywheel off and it was getting rubbed by the coils on the magnet, I put the new coils on lined them up to the bosses and put the flywheel on and it bound up on the coils so I took the flywheel off and re checked my alignment it was off a little so used a pair of brake pliars to push it all the way back while I tightened the screws down. It lined up with the flat spot on the bosses but still bound up a little just on the putter corners of the coils I could tell because I spun it over a few times and it left some wear lines on the new coils these are sierra brand coils I have and extra fly wheel from when I switched it to electric start. I've thought about cutting a window out of it so I can put a piece of paper or two between the coils and magnet and then tighten it down, but I could also solve the issue with a little sanding on the coils and maybe a little on the flywheel has anyone sanded them down a few hairs before and had it work well still??

You want the front side of the coil laminate to line up with the back edge of the bevel. And are they aftermarket coils?

I would check the plug wires at the coils. May be pushing the coils out of position -- tight squeeze. (have to remove the plate and loosen or replace wires, then connect cols and clamp down wires.)

btw. good idea to replace wires -- 7mm solid core (not automotive type).

i replaced wires along with the coils. They are sierra brand coils I pushed the boot into the armature plate and then the coil into the boot with a little lube to make sure it fited all the way in and I used the 7mm solid core👍🏻

These are some photos of the coil fitting, these are the new coils the old ones were similar. I have them as far back as possible the screws are touching the the backs of the holes would it be ok to sand them down just a little??

Some folks have noted that the quality of the new Sierra coils leaves a little to be desired, with one of the complaints being that the laminates aren't as cleanly cut as they have been in the past. Lacking the alignment ring that FR used to make, I can't think why "trimming" it with a file would be a problem.

Yes, there have been several reports of Sierra Coils not fitting properly lately. You might also consider enlarging or elongating the screw holes? Did you buy the coils here at iboats? Perhaps a call to customer service for possible warranty replacement is in order. Somebody's gotta tell Sierra about this. Or maybe they already have.

I filed the worn spots down and they aren't rubbing anymore I'll be I contact with the supplier I don't really car to get replacement parts since I got them working I use marineengine.com they have a warehouse about 60 miles from me so most of my parts come in less than 2 days after ordering even threw usps I'll give them a call tomorrow. I use to use iBoats for parts but it just works out a little better to get them faster threw them iBoats is awesome though!
