I just bought a new boat that has a 1957 evinrude 18 hp fastwin. It has wires hanging out of the motor and a cylinoid mounted to the back of the boat with wires hanging out of it, but no switch.
It works fine pulling the cord but Id like to get the auto start working. Can anyone tell me how to do this.. is there a special switch I need. Im thinking a push button type maybe. Which wires go where? I dont have an owners manual yet so any help would be appreciated. I was going to hook up a switch to my lights ( They have clip on now) a toggle for my new trolling motor, as well as a switch for a little sump , and a cigeratte lighter so I can use an electric light on board . I was hoping to make this one big panel for convience. I can hanldle alot of this but the starting button has me stumped.
Thanks
Dennis

Go to your local boat store and buy a copy of the Clymer "Evinrude/Johnson Outboard Shop Manual 1.5-125 HP 1956-1972"

On page 354 is the diagram that matches your engine. The caption says 35 hp, but the 18 hp option was the same.

You may be able to find a manual at the library.
Until you can cough up for a new manual.
"He who works on his outboard without a manual has a fool for a mechanic". Good luck.

I look forward to the day when I can get the manual. I'm just going to have to be patient. I guess when I wish I had a manual to fix my starter I can always look over at my new trolling motor and feel SOME comfort. Just think what big muscles I will have to :)

That motor has a wire harness -- plugs into the lower front, as I recall. There will be a solenoid switch in a box on the transom, and wires going out of the box up to the dash panel (used a button to start and another one to choke). A charging system was not standard, but I think it was available for the 18 (along with the 35). If you have one, there will be a belt-driven generator mounted on the block, and a regulator mounted in the transom box (or separately).

Dennis
No charging option on a 18 hp. Factory kits had the "box" on the transom, but the solenoid and push button "choke" switch can be squeezed inside the shroud if you want, mounted on the lower pan of the engine and just use the manual choke.
Backfire ;)

Dennis -- If you want to maintain the motor as an original, you will want to be aware of conversions which can't be easily reversed. You can set up the electricals under the hood, although it's probably easier to go with the original configuration (depending on how much reconstruction you have to do anyway). You can also convert to fuel pump use, if the motor has not already been converted. But take pics, save the original parts, and don't drill holes in the cowling. Oh, and it's probably best not to spraypaint the motor in some random color(!) You may later want to convert it back to its orginal form.

Good luck.
