A co worker has what I think is a 57 evinrude 35 horse push button, he says that the reverse doesnt work any ideas what to look at first, second and third before I would take it to a mechanic. It supposedly runs fine other then it doesnt go into reverse, he has the control box for it also, he says it is a long shaft and I am wanting to hang it on a 58 lonestar malibu, that im tring to find time towork on. He is asking 100 dollars for the motor so I can afford to put some money in it if need be. Another question he says it is a long shaft and im pretty sure the lone star was set up for a short shaft, I have the transome built but I built it to deep as luck may have it so with some cutting to fit I can raise it up or should I look into a short shaft. If it is the motor I think it is I would really love to hanf it on the lonestar. Thanks for any and all info 58 lonestar project 006.jpg

You should get the model number and serial number to verify what motor it is because they didn't make an electric shift model until 1962 in a 40HP model. The push button models started in 1966.

If it's a '57 I would be very surprised if it was a long shaft. Not many of those made back then.

Might just have a button start installed on it, aftermarket.

I am running into a few long shafts lately. Have my first 56 Javelin long shaft. I dont even have a boat to accomodate all these long shafts, so why do I keep buying them! :)

He didn't say it was electric shift. 1957 was the last year of the push button start and choke system. There was no kill switch. You choked it to kill it. They went to a key-start in 1958 and turning the key off killed the engine. Lots of 1957 long shafts around. If it is indeed a long shaft motor, you can either convert it back to a short shaft pretty easily, or if you're re-doing the transom anyway, just make it 20" deep.
