I have 2 questions. First, does anyone know the gap the compression reduction valves on the head it supposed to be set at? Secondly, there was a generator option kit available this year. Is it possible to still find it? Are they usually expensive? Is there a later model alternator that will also bolt on or would I be stuck with the old school generator? thx.

Don't remember the gap, but could look it up if you want. It's not critical, just so there's some gap. Thinking .020 ought to be ok.

There was a DC generator. You see them on e-bay from time to time. The trick is getting the whole kit which includes a gen mounting bracket, belt and a different cover for the junction box to house the voltage regulator. You can sink some $ into it by the time you buy a new regulator. The system was used for a lot of years, including all the electric shift 40hps.

Don't know of any alternator that will fit in there.

If you're just looking to maintain the battery for general use, get one of those solar trickle chargers. They're inexpensive and will keep the battery up with normal use. If you're running a lot of accessories, lights, etc., then get another battery and swap them out periodically, keeping one on charge at home....
