I have a '57 Lonestar Malibu with the 35hp Johnson Golden Javelin outboard engine. I have a problem with the motor that I need advice about. In recent years, I have started to see cracks developing from both sides of the lower edge of the exhaust port and progressing forward. Does anyone know what might cause them and what I can do about them? Thanks in advance...Scott

That is a problem with the casting. Never seen that before. There is no stress there to cause that. You could easily pick up a new mid-section and repaint it to match your original. if you shop right, you can get one for dirt cheap or free.

Well I've seen it numerous times. In fact, Johnson Motors saw it often too. Let it go long enough and it will break in two. That is why they changed the casting in later years. The newer motors have that area reinforced with a "bulge" (thicker metal). I'm not 100% sure, but I think you are stuck with the thin ones for your '57.

I guess your responses leads me to two questions:

  1. Any leads on where I might look for a replacement/upgraded mid-section? I'm not much of a boater and (living in New Mexico) there's not many boat parts dealers around here.
  2. What about repair? Is there a suggestion for removing the mid-section and sending it to someone who can do a professional repair on it? I need to fix a leak in the lower unit anyway. Given that it's a classic and in good shape otherwise, I don't want a crappy job done.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hey Scott, can you post some pictures of the interior of your boat. I just picked up one of these and I wanted to see how they were originally set up, specifically the center and rear seats. Thanks a lot and you have a great original boat.
