Well I got my Mark 10 all pieced together and put her in the bucket to run it a little today. Fired right up, got the carb tuned good, and started running it through the gears. Forward engages good, neutral is ok - freewheels a little, but when you put it in reverse it goes forward instead. Does anybody have an edjumacated guess?

Thanks!

You either have a broken shift spring or the shift pawls are improperly installed.

First you need to start a new thread at the bottom of the Merc main page.
new thread tab.
Disconnect the remote cable and see if it shifts by hand.If it shifts then you may have a bad cable or out of adjustment.

Re: 57 Mark 10 No Reverse

I had it all apart and I know the springs are all intact, and I know the pawls are good because I just had those out to see if they were ground down, but they're both good. Something else has to be wrong with it. When I had it running initially, it stalled when I put it in reverse - I tried turning the flywheel by hand and it was locked upand would only turn backwards untill it was put in neutral. I don't see where the problem would be in the trunion carrier, seeing as it works like a differential in a car rearend - not much to be at fault there.

ALRIGHT lol! I had it out on the lake today though. First time on the lake in 30 years for the motor and 40 for the boat... ran like a rat with nuts (except for reverse). It doesn't like passengers too much - runs the best with the gas tank in the front and me at the tiller.

Guess I'll have to tear it all down again and see what the reverse issue is. Thanks for the advice and ideas!

Re: 57 Mark 10 No Reverse

I fixed it, holy crap! I filed down a piece of flat stock and suck it in the pawl compartment to hold the springs down and keep more pressure on them when you put the vent cover back on, and it actually hold in neutral without freewheeling and reverse works like she did from the factory in 1957!

Now I got a stuttering problem that needs taking care of. I bought new plugs and was threading the top one in by hand and the threads are shot... took off the head to realize it wasn't a head... it was a water block-off plate to the cylinder jugs lol... kinda hard to run a drill and tap through a cylinder without keeping the metal junk out of it.
