58 35hp throttle adjustment?

Was running the motor on the lake yesterday and it seems that everytime the throttle is pulled all the way back the motor will die. It also seems that full throttle isn't truly full throttle. Is this a throttle adjustment or will it have to be done on the carb?

Sounds like you lost ignition on one cylinder. You can do a cylinder drop test and spark test to be sure.

Both cylinders were firing but the throttle seems like it's set to low. At idle the throttle can come back another inch that's when it dies out.

Without knowing whether it's 'new behaviour' or usual performance, I just assumed it was running OK previously but now not. Hopefully somebody with specific knowledge of your motor will chime in.

It was supposed to be adjusted that way so that he didn't have to use the electric start and ignition at all he was just using the pull start and pulled the throttle down to kill the motor. I don't know if that helps.

If indeed the idle speed was set too low to keep running when turned all the way back, that would be normal operation. Adjust the idle speed if you want it to stay running when throttle is all the way toward "slow" (NOT the slow speed mixture needle). Full throttle adjustments are a completely different topic and somewhat more complicated, requiring several steps that must be performed in correct sequence.

How should I adjust the idle speed on the casing? Or should I adjust the throttle linkage on the side of the motor so that when the throttle lever is all the way back it is still idling?

Depending on which motor you have, the idle speed screw will be on the throttle gear on the side of the motor, or it may be going down from the top into the steering bracket aft of the tiller (if it has a tiller). Look for a white plastic screw with a spring around it. Being plastic, it probably is in poor condition by now. You can use a 1/4-20 screw to replace it if you want to. Better than the plastic anyway

Mine has both but it is set up with controls at the front so I assume it will be theone on the side of the motor (outside the motor cover) is like threaded rod running through a black knob. My idea was to have it idle then disconnect the rod pull the throttle to low at the remote and adjust the rod to be at that position for idle. Is that a correct way too do this?

Anyone have any ideas on this? Otherwise I'm just going to try it and see what happens.

Sounds like you are contemplating adjusting the throttle cable to set idle speed. NO, that is not how you do it. In fact, the correct way is to completely remove the throttle cable from the motor, then set idle speed while cable is removed. Then reinstall the cable and adjust it to the motor. Never adjust the motor to fit the controls, always adjust the controls to fit the motor.

It sure would help if you would tell us what motor you have. There were was a 1958 Big Twin, a '58 Big Twin Electric, and a '58 Lark. All were 35hp. Idle adjustments are different between the Big Twins and Lark.

It is a 35 super seahorse 1958. When the remote control is at quarter throttle the motor is at idle. Any less throttle the motor will die. How would I fix this? I figured adjusting the throttle cable so it was at low will the engine was a title would be the correct way to do this but I guess not. If anybody could tell me the correct way to do this on me greatly appreciative
