58 Elgin lower unit lube?

Hey All, I picked up this old Elgin 7.5. When I went to replace gear lube this thick grease came out(I had to use compressed air)and a little water. Is this supposed to be there? I replaced it with 90w and it seems to leak a little (whitish globules in the water behind the boat.) This engine had sat for about 30 years, could the lube have solidified? Is there a special grease that was used for these? I don't want to damage anything, parts are hard to find. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Older motos used grease not oil. It is actually better for the older ones. Make sure there is no water in there water and bearings and gears do not match!!! ;)

Thanks STM, Is there any particular grease that I should use, or will any water proof grease work? Thanks again!
