I'm on vacation, and yesterday spun the hub on the prop on my 58 10HP Evinrude. I was able to get up and going again by pulling the prop from my "spare" motor, a 64 Johnson 9.5. But, while I'm waiting for the wind to go back down so I can go fishing once more, I'm investigating my options for a replacement prop.

Starting here at iboats, my search indicates that an OEM prop would cost about $150, a Michigan Wheel prop would be around $100-120, and a Solas would be around $60-70. Now, being the kind of guy I am, I'm most interested in the less expensive option - IF it will hold up and work well.

I've heard of the two more expensive brands, but I know little of Solas. Can any of you enlighten me about their quality on an old Evinrude?

That's a possibility, but it might take a while. There's one there right now, but with shipping it would be $40, and that's if I got it for the opening bid. If I'm going for used, I wouldn't want to pay more than half the cost of a new Solas. Even though they are cheaper than the other brands, they "sound" good.

Another possibility is to buy a new hub and press it in myself. There's a video on Youtube by a guy who did that. Doesn't look too hard, if you have a press, and I may know a guy with a press...

How do you know if the used one will spin it's hub or not? It's old, right? I'd spring for the Solas.

Got an old time boat shop or two in that vacation spot? Might have one on the shelf.

I use a Solas on one of my 9.9 trolling motors and have no complaints (in case you go that route).
