'58 Fastwin Carb Questions

I have two issues:

I bought a Sierra carb kit. Some of the parts are a bit unclear. In the picture below there are 6 packing washers (I think). Do I put 3 each on the low and high speed needle valves? Should I use the float valve spring? The old one does not have a spring. What about the 'O' rings and the thinner round gasket--it does not seem to have a purpose. I already found the one for the float valve seat.

Second issue. I have been reading about removing the high speed jet with a special tool. In the picture below, I do not see an evidence of a jet that can be removed. Does this model (15024) not have one?

I could say something about Sierra's Quality Control department, but I won't. I doubt they even have a QC department. If they do, the guy must be off on a toot most of the time.

Anyhow, it gets two packings on each needle valve. If you have the gasket washer for the float valve, I don't know what the other one is.

Do you have the thick gasket for the center nozzle to bowl boss? That is one of the most inportant ones.

I have no idea why they gave you two o-rings.

There is no fixed high speed jet to remove. That is what the high speed needle is for.

Yes, you need to use the float valve spring clip. The old one didn't have one because it wasn't needed. But the new needle with the soft tip needs the clip

Yes, that washer is included. The packing washers seem a bit too large in diameter. Do I need to soak them in something or should I get some new ones?

Too large?? You mean the inside diameter? Y'know they squish down when the packing nut is tightened, right?

Outside diameter. Will not go far enough into threaded hole in order to start threads on nut. Could sand down a bit or soften with something.

Update on the Sierra packing washers.

The packing washers on the high speed valve started leaking. Tightening the nut down a bit more did not help. I found a local dealer and bought some factory OMC packing washers. The new ones are flexible and fit better. I replaced the packing on the low and high speed valves. Time will tell if these work better, but the flexibility almost guarantees a better seal. The Sierra packing was quite hard and brittle. Not sure if this is normal or if my kit was just old.
