I took apart the lower unit on my 58 gale 35 hp made by omc so is like a johnson. When I pulled off the lower housing, there was no pinion gear bracket, and the driveshaft is not wanting to come off the pinion gear. It will slide an inch or so on the pinion but does not want to come off. I dont want to force it because the shaft and gear looks to be in good shape. Any suggestios. Is it possible that there was not a pinion gear bracket in the first place? I am using a seloc manual as my guide for repair. I posted a photo as well. Any help appreciated.
