Tore down the lower unit to reseal and to my surprise I saw this: Two teeth chipped off the pinion gear. No debris in the bottom of the gear case. So I'm assuming someone has been in there before me. Anyway, I have a new gear so I'm good to go. I ran this motor pretty hard so I'm surprised it didn't skip a tooth or two. No damage to the forward and reverse gears.

Be sure to check the drive shaft bushing just above the pinion gear. They have a nasty habit of wearing, causing side-ways slop in the shaft and improper gear teeth mesh.

Interesting - - I am rebuilding an 1958 Sportwin 10 hp and was surprised to find the pinion gear had 2 teeth missing as well. They were in the bottom of the gear box in very little pieces amongst the sludge that was formerly oil.

Thank you F_R, I am replacing the housing and seal assembly, not a cheap date.

Boy, that gear is toast. The driveshaft is pretty knarled up too.
