Acquired a 1958 35hp Seahorse twin. RDS 20. Lower is off. Has F/N/R. Question is can I pull the driveshaft out and have no trouble putting it back in, or will the top gear (or bottom or yoke or whatever) lose its location, and have me tossing more wrenches at the shop door? I'm gonna kill somebody yet if they enter at the wrong time. Thanks in advance for possibly saving someones life (or at least a super dented forehead), and more motor related aggravation caused by another dumb move by yours truly.

After removing the impeller housing, impeller and key, and plate, the drive shaft should just pull out Scaaty. Shouldn't have to worry about parts falling into the lower unit.

Don't think I'm wrong...but if I am....just mail me a wrench and I'll hit my self in the forehead with it.

Yep, the shaft will pull right out/slide right back in. Be careful not to tear the upper seal... Best to do it with the upper drain screw out as it can build up some suction...

Sage advice ^^^

I put a new seal in my Chrysler and forgot to take out the upper drain screw. When I slid the shaft back in it blew the seal right back out with a pop. No harm done, but I learned a little lesson there.

Terrific advise....NEVER thought of a drain screw removal for equalizing air pressure. The older I get, the more I learn (and the more I forget too, so I don't know if I'm getting ahead, behind, or treading water!) I need to ship it, and want to lessen the box size. Thanks again guys....advise MUCH appreciated!
