'59 50 hp water flow

After running about 30 minutes and shutting it off. Would not restart.
Found that starboard cylinders were very hot. After cooling off, it
restarted and made it back to dock.
Removed thermostat and top of thermo housing, replaced impeller and
started it immersed in large trash can. Water comes out of both the cylinder head outlets, not the thermo housing. Is this the right direction of flow?
(I had removed the old hoses as they were cracked) I want to be sure
before heading out again.

Thanks for any response

Was the old impeller missing any vanes, or chunks?

Nope, the old one looked pretty good. I did notice some grooving and
wear on the bottom plate and the pump housing though. I'm curious about
the route water is supposed to take upon leaving the pump. I would have
thought it would go from the thermostat housing to the cylinder heads instead
of vice versa.

Thanks for reply,

Stephen

Did you notice the two water tubes, when you removed the gearcase? That is the water recirculating circuit. The thermostat box has a lite spring and a plastic plug. This pressurizes the cooling water to 10 PSI. The water circulates from the pump thru the heads, and back to the pump, until the thermostat opens. If you are overheating, test the thermostat. It should push the plug open at 143*

Thanks Chris,

Today will head out w/o thermostat and plug and see how hot it gets.
I left the lite spring and plug in. Any idea why starboard side got so hot
while port side wasn't bad?

No, I do not know why one side would get hotter. Are the plugs the same type? With the thermostat hoses off, does the same amount of water exit the heads?
