Hey all, just finished overhaulin' this awesome motor! Problem is this: I have the exhaust housing and complete lower unit put back together but can't get the prop shaft to rotate in forward or reverse. It will rotate in neutral, but that is it. I have taken it apart twice now and can't find the problem. All parts are in good shape and as far as I can tell, reassembled correctly. Shift dog is good. Parts are lined up correctly. Any ideas? Please keep in mind, I am trying to do this by hand. I have NOT attached the powerhead as of yet. Thanks for any help.

Re: '59 Evinrude 10018 10Hp Prop Shaft Won't Rotate

hi bassin. I had a '61 10 hp Johnson which is a very similar motor. The only thing that I can think of is that the FWD and REV gears may not be free to rotate because they're rubbing against the inner walls of the gear case. Before you take everything apart. Try dropping the lower unit one more time and shifting into gear by hand. You should go into FWD gear by pulling up firmly on the shift rod. Then rotate the drive shaft CLOCKWISE to see if the prop spins clockwise also. If it does rotate, then FWD should be ok. Now press down firmly on the shift shaft rod. Again, rotate the drive shaft CLOCKWISE. The prop should now rotate counterclockwise (i.e. reverse). If it still not working you may have to open it up one more time. Make sure that the prop shaft bearings are properly aligned too. My little 10 hp had a little pin that seated into the bearing to make sure it was correctly positioned, but it can become worn down over time, or the bearing can seat on it improperly and cause the gears to jam. Give these a try and let us know what you find. This link may help too.

Agree this is probably the problem. If you can get it to turn by slightly loosening the skeg bolts, then that is the problem

Problem fixed!!! Pulled the L/U and still no movement. So took skeg off to get to prop shaft and BAM, it hit me straight in the face.... I saw a slot in the skeg and realized when I placed the prop shaft in the L/U I had the Gearcase Head upside down.... damn.... so put it back together the right way and now I have movement. Thankx guys for the assist.
