59 gale 35 hp, when pulled driveshaft, didnt see any o ring, did i ever have one?

hello, i just replaced my water pump impeller on my 1959 gale 35 hp, but i didn't see any o ring on the drive shaft near the power head, or a spot on the shaft that would support a o ring gasket, did it just fall off or maybe i never had one?
any ideas?

I believe it should have one but it probably "disappeared" sometime during the last 52 years! That's a harsh environment inside those exhaust housings. Try OEM p/n 303059, it should fit just below the splines and provide a seal between the crankshaft and driveshaft. Good luck!

You'll definately want to get a new one in there. That o-ring helps keep the splines centered and also keeps lubricant up inside where the splines meet, so the drive shaft does sieze up inside the crank. I haven't had to deal with that ugly scenario, but several here have and it's not pretty.

Also be sparing with the grease on the splines as too much won't allow the spline to slip into the craNK.
