59 gale 35hp, wont idle, just spits and backfires, runs great now with video!

just installed new plugs, points/condenser, magnetos on a 1959 gale 35 hp sovereign, it starts, but the idle is jumpy, engine bucks and sounds like a backfire, maybe its a carb setting?, can i clean the carb without taking it apart, like a carb cleaner through the gas lines or such? i also notice as the engine bucks, the part that hold the magnetos and such under the flywheel jumps around as well, but i understood its supposed to move as you advance the throttle. finally, i understood its a 24/1 ratio, but guy at boat dealer said that with old types of gas and oil from 1959, and that 50/1 is right for todays gas and oil

adjusted points a bit better, new fuel lines and water pump and it runs!

But does it run well? Your boat guy is nutsy fagan...it should be run at 24:1 mix using modern TCW-3 marine/outboard oil...unless you want a big boat anchor.
