I have a 1999 evinrude 5hp 4 stroke that leaks oil after running at speed for a while. I belive I need to replace the head gasket. Do you think this a job that a person that is somewhat fimilar withe engines can tackle or should I take it to the shop? (It is a 1 cylinder motor)
Thanks for the help!

I sort of doubt that an oil leak could be from a head gasket. Perhaps a valve cover gasket?

I am not 100% sure that it is the head gasket. As the engine warms up after a few minutes at WOT, the engine looses power, smoke comes out of the above water outlet and oil starts leaking into the water from where the power head meets the midsection. After some oil drips out over the next few hours, the engine runs fine.

Sounds like oil is getting pumped into the intake, BT. Lots of expensive places that could happen. I don't know your engine so I won't speculate.

Sounds like it's overheating and steam is coming out the tell-tale.

That sounds correct. The water pump pumps water very strong. Do you know what I need to replace to prevent the overheating?

in my opinion you need head gasket and gasket between powerhead and midsection change

with new head gasket its good to flaten head surface in machine shop
