What is the typical compression for a B&S 5hp engine? Mine is barely 50psi. I think that's aweful low.

The engine runs fine, but once you put it under load it slowly dies. I've cleaned the tank and carb and it still didn't help.

Thanks

I put a little bit of oil in the cylinder and it jumped right up to 120psi! I think it's safe to say the rings are shot.

Thanks for answering my own questoin.

A valve grind can help too, though it sounds like you are right about the rings.

Most have a compression relief that keeps the exhaust valve open slightly until rpm is gained after start.
Comp test is of no use on a Briggs....leak-down test is the only way to tell, and you have to place the piston in the proper position for that to work.
