I found this motor at a garage sale... I was thinking about buying it buy I wanted to do some research first! The owner said he ran it about 3 years ago before storing it. It does appear to be complete except the cover. I turned it over and it does seem to have good compression. When I looked in the gas tank I saw this yellowish residue/paste....that cant be good. He must of stored it with gas in it...? Would it be worth trying to save it and bringing it back to life? Also how hard is it going to be finding parts for this motor? Thanks.

Your motor is a 51-53 built by the Gale devision of omc.
It is difficult to tell exactly what E/J motors it might share parts with if any.If it has molded plastic coils then it will share ignition parts with similar E/J motors.These are readily available.At various times there have been at least 3 different 5s built by Gale at the same time.These are all good motors and at least share parts with the many other private label motors built by Gale if not deirectly with E/J motors.
Comeplete motors in good shape are collected by some because of their small size and simple design.

The old man at the garage sale where I saw it was askin $60. But I can probably talk him down to $30. Think it would be worth it? If I could get it running.... for $30 thats a deal!! But....if something is broke/missing im screwed right? Thanks.

You can find parts probably mostly used.
If you go to www.aomci.org someone there can tell you more about the motor.

If it's all there, with hot spark and a clean fuel system, $50 is a steal. Those are stout little motors....check it for compression, spark and whether there is gunk in the tank, if it's clean offer him $40.
