I have a 70 something (I'm guessing)5hp Johnson that I picked up for free. The previous owner said it would run, but it had locked up when he threw it in gear... Well I've replaced a broken seal and reassembled the unit but I had the same problem. My question is, What is the order that I need to put the 5 pieces on the top of the shaft(spring, collar, seal, washer, etc)? Thanks for any help, Pat :(

Do you have the model number of the motor?

after checking all but the obvious, I finally found the model #cd-21a. Looks like it might be a '66?

Re: 5hp Johnson Driveshaft

That's a 1964 vintage I think. The order on the driveshaft for the lower seal is:
1) pin through driveshaft
2) washer (spring retainer)
3) spring
4) bearing (collar)
5) o-ring
6) plate (large washer)
7) gasket (cork?)
The driveshaft rotates even when in neutral, so I expect you'll find your problems in either the lower unit or possibly the water pump, which is directly above the gearcase & the driveshaft passes through. A manual would be of great help to you here. Good luck!

Hi PJ,
I'm 99.9% certain I know what's wrong with your motor. The lower driveshaft is broken. Those CDs used a 2-piece driveshaft, with the lower portion being a spring clutch shock absorber deal, located under the water pump/bearing plate. Anyway, they do break from time to time, and will bind up the motor in gear...
- Scott

Re: 5hp Johnson Driveshaft

As it turns out, the lower casting of the water pump is in terrible shape. So I am currently searching for a replacement, so far no luck. But I do feel I'm going to get the relic working yet. :) I sure am thankful for all the help!
