Even though it wont idle (carb needs cleaning) last warm day of the year, after a 12 hour work day, I'm taking it out to the lake. I did not know it was supposed to, but the oil pressure lamp never came on, but it ran good for the hour I had it out. Apparently it had oil pressure enough to run.

Any way, it looks blank inside the indicator, like a broken bulb, is there a way to test and or correct the indication? does not seem like it would run that long it it was not getting oil pressure.

Faster testing, get a new bulb and test it. Could have a faulty pressure switch too or a very rare combination of both failing..

Is this a Honda 5hp or Tohatsu 5hp? If Tohatsu 5hp pull your safety lanyard cord off (so it won't start), and pull on the rope start. As you pull on the rope start, you should see the red oil light blink on & off. If it's a Honda 5hp...I have no idea, never owned one.

This is regarding a Tohatsu/Nissan 5hp.. I have no clue on the Honda version:

Are you sure it just hasn't slipped down too far in the rubber bushing? Mine had some oil on it and kept slipping down. I cleaned it off and also put a ty-wrap around it to tighten it a bit.

Also.. I don't think that light is supposed to be lit unless you have LOW oil pressure. It blinks when you're starting, but mine does not light when the engine is running.

Sorry, I forgot this forum is not just Honda. It's a Honda

Not sure cuz you never said the year but, mine (1992 9.9BF) uses a neon lamp, those typically don't go bad for years and years and begin to flicker when they're on their way out.

If a wire didn't just fall off or ya have a corroded connector in the works, I hazard a guess that the pressure switch is bad OR the engines oil presser is actually low! Lower than the pressure threshold to close the pressure switch and have the light come on but, obviously high enough to not blow the engine..........

If you rev the engine way up just for a sec, does the light come on? and/or flicker on a bit ?

When the motor is running/idling, if you use a jumper wire and ground the low (pressure switch side) side of the light, does the light come on?
