Hey, new to the site, and im about to loose my mind. I have a 1957 sea king, 5 hp, m#gg8960a. I have searched everywhere for awnsers, I cannot get the lower unit to drop. I removed the 4 bolts at the base, and the unit drops about 1.5 inches or so. It appears to be attached to the gear shifter, but that shows no way of being removed. Any advice is wonderful, I need to get to the impeller, as it's not running any water out when running. I can get pictures taken if needed. Thanks for your help

put in reverse, look into opening where lower dropped down, look for a block with two screws, remove the lower one, should be free now.

Sorry ron, right answer but wrong year. On the 1957 you have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod.

Thanks for the info, not sure if i'll actually do it, appears like it might be quite a daunting task. Anyone done this before? I also noticed it's got cracked coils, who knows what else. Any specific concerns if I go in to do this job? And thanks for your advice

Removing the powerhead is no biggie deal--unless the bolts are siezed. Remove the vertical throttle control shaft, disconnect the gas line, remove the 7 screws holding the powerhead down and remove it from the motor. Remove the two nuts and lockwasher that hold the shift rod to the inner lever. Now you are free to remove the lower unit.

While you are in there, take careful attention to the seal assembly on the top end of the drive shaft. That seal is vitally important to the life of the motor. If bad, water gets into the crankcase and slowly destroys all the bearings inside. If everything looks fine, use a new 303347 o-ring and 303355 gasket (parts of the seal assembly). Glue the 303355 gasket to the plate that it sticks to. You will also need a new 303567 powerhead gasket. All that stuff is available here at iboats. Coils also.

Don't remove the screw securing the inner shift lever to the shifter shaft. If you do, be extremely careful not to break the lever. It is very fragile after the screw is removed. But as I said, no need to remove it. Well actually there is a reason to. You may want to remove it and replace the o-ring on the shifter shaft to keep it from dripping water when running. If you decide to do that, remove the screw and slide the lever straight off the shaft without rotating it.

F_R,

Thank you so much for the info, that's the explanation I was looking for. I was able to find the o-rings (by part numbers that you listed) but unable to find the powerhead gasket on the website. I entered my model number but nothing comes up on the site. How did you find a part list? I want to make sure I order coils with gaskets as well. Thanks again!

Part numbers came from 1957 Sea King parts book. They are OMC/BRP numbers. You have to convert them to Sierra for purchase at iboats.

303355 gasket is 18-2892 here at iboats. Coils are 18-5181 here at iboats. OOPS!!!! typo on the powerhead gasket. Should be 303467. Unfortunately, Sierra doesn't make that one. You have to get it from an Evinrude dealer or somebody selling genuine OMC/BRP parts.
