I have a 1968 Evinrude 40 hp model 40873a. The previous owner said to use 5w-30 in the gearcase. He said the regular gear oil is too thick.

Is that good advice?

Absolutely bad advice.
Use Type "C" gear oil for electric shift lower ends. This is different oil than is normally used in outboard gearcases, but it's not as thin as 5W-30

bad advise!80w90 gear oil is closer to what you want or to be more specific omc hi viscosity gearcase lube or omc gearcase lube as per you motor specs.marine grade in any event if you choose to go aftermarket.i use full syn.

i would like to add that though ive done it myself ,hence the 80w90 comment ive learned from reading several manuals of all makes that marine gear oil is the only way to go unless you absolutely cant find any. in a emergency anything is better than nothing ,but i cant really see why that would happen .regular auto gear oil expands and foams too much where as marine does not .your lower unit does not have any provisions to accomodate expansion as per the manual im reading at the moment.and if its a elect shift as whaler has stated he,s absolutely correct use type c or eqivilent omc gear oil.i was making my previous comments on the assumption it was a manual shift .

40873 is a Selectric shift. Proper oil is a MUST. And proper oil is type C. Evinrude has changed their name of it to "Evinrude / Johnson Premium Blend". Other mfr's still call it type C. Never, ever use Hi-Vis or 80-90. The guy's 10-30 would be better than that.

iboats sells type C, so no excuse that you can't find it. Evinrude dealers have the Premium Blend.
