Have a 1999 Johnson 200hp outboard model J200PXEEN that likes to sneeze at low idle. I have the factory manual and will be doing a link/sync and carb adjustment. For the carb adjustment procedure it says to adjust one carb at a time until it produces the highest consistent RPM and then move on to the next carb. Seems easy enough if there were only a couple carbs... but I have 6.

How to I go about doing this if I don't have a consistent RPM to begin with?? The motor tends to trip up every minute or so at idle only, followed by a drop in RPM, and then either catch itself or stall?? Once I put in gear and give it a bit of gas, I have no issues.

Re: 6 Cyl. Carb Adjust Procedure

You have cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, with new gaskets, inlet needles and seats? You have all the carb covers snugged down? Whereas I have not had to do the carb synch on my 150HPV6 Johnny, I have successfully synched the six carbs on my Merc. The secret is to adjust each carb a bit at a time until you get highest and smoothest RPM. Keep adjusting each carb until the idle quality is maxed out, and then move on. Make sure the idle timing is correct, and you can use a little throttle advance if necessary in the beginning to keep the motor running. Drop it down as you get the adjustment correct.

Re: 6 Cyl. Carb Adjust Procedure

I have not cleaned and rebuilt each carb at this point. I have replaced fuel lines, all connections, fuel filter, fuel/water separator, and decarbed with seafoam. Seemed to improve after replacing the fuel lines and connections (longer time span between sneezes). Was hoping that by adjusting the carbs the issue might go away. Thanks for the tips, Ill give it a shot!
