6 HP Evinrude

I just bought a 6 hp evinrude and I am trying to find out what year it is. The serial number is 5518-13194.
Also, when I ran it in my driveway it ran fine but when I took it out on the lake it starts and runs well for about 200 yards and then it starts to get hot, loses power and the back end starts smoking. Anybody know what would cause that?

5518 is the model number for a 1959 5.5HP. The first thing you do with an old outboard is replace the waterpump.

I had the same problem with a new impeller installed. Check the thermostat, it may have collected debris and stopped the water flow.

some of these motors have trouble with the impeller chipping so small it can work its way up into the circulation paths.

you may be stopped up somewhere else. Even up in the head.
