Assuming that the shift rod connector is properly installed and indexed, with it's two mounting bolts, the next most likey culprit is the 'dog gear' in the lower unit is slipping. When it slips out of gear, you may think you hit something with the lower unit.

If I tie the shift lever in the forward position it will stay in gear. If the dog gear is slipping what should be replaced to repair?

Yep, what X said. Sometimes you can get by with just replacing the clutch dog. Other times if the forward gear lobes and dog lobes are really rounded over, ya' gotta replace both. What this is caused by mainly is S L O W L Y shifting into forward. The lobes bounce of each other and wear them over round...then you get that "hitting a log" effect. Snapping the gear in reduces this.

Hi RG,
Another thing to look for - I had the detent tab in the lower unit come loose on a customer motor awhile back. He had the same symptoms as yours. I cleaned up the threads for the retainer screw and LocTited the detent tab back in place...
The tab is located inside the gearcase - you'll see it if you split it to check the clutch dog...
- Scott
