6 hp johnson

i have a 6 hp outboard. i don't know the exact year but its between 1970's and 1980's. it cranks usually first try and runs great but as soon as i cut it off it wont start until it cools back down. i took the thermostat out and it still does it. does anybody know what the problem could be?

Ignition-related. Search along those lines. Coils would be a good place to look first. It would help if we knew what year.

Major change in the period you mention was from points ignition to CD ignition. Late 70s IIRC.

Have you checked the sparks when it wont start? Good sparks then fuel/carb related probably
No sparks then ignition problem.

Is it a late enough model to have a stop button. If so have you checked that.
