I was recently given a 6 hp Mercury 4 stroke engine that had been run with no water cool for about 20 minutes before it shut down. Besides an impeller what other damage could be done to the engine. Is it worth putting any money into at this point. It does have compression. It is approx a 2006 model.

How much compression? The thumb test doesn't tell you much.

A lot of things can be bad. Overheats are bad and 20 minutes isn't an overheat, it's a meltdown.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks Boater. I suspect he gave it to me because it’s fried. I’ll likely put it to the curb rather than dump money into it.

You can pull the head for cheap, meaning free, and look at the bore. With a long time overheat, the piston and cylinder can be scored beyond repair.

Have a 6 HP 4 stroke that got so hot that it melted the dipstick and damaged plastic cowlings too.--------There may well be other plastic bits inside these little engines.------Look it over carefully before spending any coins for parts.
