ok, for those that may have followed my recent post, i found the problem with the studdering at top end speed, it was sucking a small amount of air around the fuel lines that feed each carburetor. but now i can't seem to get the engine to run at idle speed worth a darn. top end and low speed are fine. and in neutral the motor idles fine. but when i try to idle in forward, it runs rough and then will eventually die. the carbs are clean and i have been adjusting the low speed needles, but i just can't seem to make it work. any hints or is this something i'm just going to have to live with on this engine (60 hp 1971, 3 cylinder looper)? thanks guys.

When you are turning the needles...do they turn really easy..or do they seem tight?

Are you adjusting them separately or with the sync rod?

TMD

Re: 60 hp 1971 rough idle

they are tight TMD, i put in new d-seals when i cleaned the carbs. the rod is no longer on this engine so i am adjusting each carb seperately. now, my manual says to back the needles out 5/8 of a turn and then make minor adjustments from there. i am going to today try the 1 1/2 turn method that is often posted on here and see what happens. i will post later, but in the meantime if you guys have ANY ideas, i am open for ANY suggestions. thanks again for any replies.

The reference turn are for an engine will little or no wear. As the engine gets older..you will find that you have to adjust the carbs accordingly.

TMD

thanks TMD, i took to boat to the water this morning, readjusted the ss needles using the 1 1/2 turn method and now i'm idling fine. its a little rough running at slow speed but still alot better than it was. thank you guys so much for your insight. now i have another question that i must post. i will post it seperatly though so i don't miss any posts, but it seems i have milk in my carbs. check out my new post and thanks again for all your help.
