60 hp 2 cyl water in bottom cyl

Hi I have a 1983 60hp with water in the bottom cyl I think it is a head gsket becouse I have only an outer exhaust cover gasket. Is there any other place for water to get in? Also gan the head gasket be done on the boat?

The head gasket is a good choice and probably the issue.

It could also be a powerhead to mid section gasket. I doubt the latter.

Replace the head gasket.

To do it right, see following.

1. Remove head.

2. Scrape old gasket material off using only a plastic scraper.

3. Re-install, using torque spec's. Remember, these head bolts are torqued in INCH pounds, NOT FOOT pounds.

4. Run engine through complete heat up and cool down cycle.

5. Re-torque with engine cold.

Speaking in generalities only, there are 3 major routes that water gets into cylinders.

Head Gasket
Exhaust gaskets or baffle plate---Probably not in yours
Lower main bearing seal

And don't scoff--a hole or defect or corrosion through a casting.

So, it's a search and discover project.

FR is correct, thiose are the avenues in which H2O arrives in a cylinder.

My bets are on the head gasket. My experience with OMC head gaskets has proven that they are: Undertorqued.

However, once failed, only replacement brings the engine back.

So the head gasket is relativey common. I do have equal comp though. Does omc use any gasket sealer on the head gasket?
