60 hp evinrude over revving when taken out of gear

I have a 1982 60 evinrude that over revs for a few seconds after being taken out of gear. I have full power and no other problems with the motor. What could it be?

check your linkage, return spring could be weak of missing.

Tashasdaddy - thanks for the reply. Are you referring to the advance/retard linkages connected to the carbs and under the flywheel?

yes, the plate under the flywheel may also be sticiking, and not returning, keeping the spark advanced, causing it to over rev.

check also the linkage between carbs.. One of the carbs butterfly may be still a little bit open when you take out of gear
