60 HP Johnson stalls at low speed

Hi, I have a 1991 Johnson which would not start. I took it in to a local repair shop and they found nothing but oil in the carbeurator and in their words, everywhere. They cleaned it all out and returned to me saying it's now running good. I took it out on the water and it starts just fine alright but as soon as I put it into gear it dies anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes later. It sputters and coughs then stalls. It is pushing a lot of blue. Took it back and all they did was adjust the idle speed. I took it back out and same problem if not worse. In the research I've done I'm thinking it may be the VRO pump being faulty or the fuel pump in some way. I'm not very literate on motor mechanics though and have little faith in the local shop. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems to run fine in nuetral for quite a while without stalling, but does push A LOT of blue. The motor also runs fine at full speed. I can get top speeds as I always have in the past. I have eliminated bad gas as a possible cause.

Okay, I'm no expert by any means, but it seems to me that if your VRO pump wasn't puttin ENOUGH oil into the mix, the warning buzzer would go off. Not sure if it goes off if it's putting too much oil in there or not. I have a johnson GT150 on my ranger, that has similar symptoms to what you describe, until I run it a little. Once I get it warmed up, I can cruise along in gear without giving it any gas at all for a long time. But when it's cold, it will stall quickly.

I would suggest finding a different shop based solely on the comment you made about the faith in the local shop.

If you lose faith in your mechanics, there's no need in taking it to them any longer.

So far, I have done all the work on my boat myself, but admittedly, all I've ever done was drain the water out of the carbs when I got water into my gas a couple of years back.

I'm going to attempt to track down a manual for my particular engine, I've seen them online on this site for a very reasonable price. If you have no faith in your local shop and can't find another, get a manual and give it a try yourself.
