60 hp max can I use a 85hp ?

I have a 1973 arrow glass tarpon 15' boat that has a max rating for a 60 hp could I use a 85hp evinrude or is it way to dangerous, I have a 50 hp evinrude on it now and having motor issues

Sell ur 85hp and get a good running 60hp... max ratings are set for a reason.

Aside from the safety and structural issues . . .

You'll basically void out any insurance coverage you have by running an outboard that's too big for the boat's rating.

what's wrong with the 50hp? i went back a read your post. did you ever do a compression test. what were the readings???

In many (if not most) states, it is illegal to overpower a boat. In my state, if somebody made a 61Hp motor and you mounted it, you'd be breaking the law.

Get that compression test on the motor as suggested by tashasdaddy. It'll save you a lot of effort and help pinpoint the real problem. Mine turned out to be a carb rebuild being needed.

thanks guys I did the compression test it came out fine, I pulled the plugs out that were almost new and they were black and oilly, cleaned them up but cant seem to get it running right, put different carbs on and still can run over 9 mph

so called new plugs can foul and be shot also ,try a new set and see what happens,i know on my snowmachine if i foul plugs they are no good anymore period.
