60 hp merc won;t idle

If I can get this motor to idle it just stalls when I put it in gear.Motor wasn't run for awhile and the gas in the fuel bowl smelled like varnish.

I recently purchased a used boat with a motor that hadn't been run in two years. Suggest a carb rebuild kit. Replace fuel pump diaphram. Carb clean all parts. Carb settings might need to be adjusted. Just completed mine and it runs much better.
