60 HP VRO - Question about Removed VRO

Just recently bought 88 60 HP. VRO had been bypassed by capping the oil line at the connector, etc. My question is, what happens if the rubber plug used to cap the oil line begins to leak?? Is there a risk of engine damage if the pump begins to draw air from this location??

It could damage the engine if it somehow sucks up water. If it has been bypassed replace the pump with standard pump.
