I recently replaced the waterpump on my brothers 94 model 60HP, making sure the impellor was seated in accordance of the diagram in the manual. Original was a 3 blade impellor, dealer said a 6 blade replacement was ok. A new pump housing of identicle nature was also replaced.

Worked fine on the ear muffs and hose for around 10 to 15 minutes, whith a reasomable stream from telltale, but 2 weeks after I left, my brother put it in the water, no stream and OverHeat buzzer came on and the unit was shut down.

He started it breifly before putting it in the water ( to make sure it started before launching)

After dropping the leg, and dissasembling the pump, he found all 6 blades sheered off.

Any thoughts on what or why this happened...?

thanks

impeller always has to have water. even a quick run can ruin them.

Unfortunately, the engine model number and serial number is unrecognisable on the block, and the numbers stamped on the block - which I believe is duplicate serial or block number, are only partially available. It was sold to him as a 95, but looking at details in the manual, I can see parts from a 93 to 96 through illustrations. The code from the block number indicates a 90 "something"

We had a rough idea that it was a 95 model,( due to it being sold as a 95) but the waterpump housing that corresponded with what was actually fitted was a 94.

The impellor that was fitted was to suit a 94, but it was a 6 blade, where the original was a 3 blade. I don't have any part numbers available ( just to make things difficult )

The pump housings were different at 92 and 96 ( all the same in between these years) and would not have fitted, so it was easy to get the housing in this range, but there were a couple of differing impellors, a 3 blade, a 5 blade and a 6 blade.

The dealer told us, that the legs and waterpumps were all Identicle during these years and the 6 blade impellor was the last and the most efficent and produced a more constant stream at the teltale.
The original 3 blade, was never great, but that could have been because it was old and not seating properly any more. When installed, the 6 blade seemed to install on the shaft and rotate as it should in the housing. A small amount of rubber grease was put on the inside edge of the new housing, to help with the initial bedding in and rotation out of the water.

I did advise my brother not to start without being in water, he said it was just to "fireup" and only a second or so, at low revs, but I know even this can cause damage.

All 6 impellor blades, broke away, leaving a 6 pointed rubber hub

Thanks for your help so far

Was it a BRP or Sierra?

I am assuming you are talking brand of the new part ???

Because we were checking the original, the packaging was left behind at the dealer, ... so no idea

It looked more after market than genuine, and reflected in the price as well. There was nothing imprinted on the new housing.

I didn't catch the part about running the motor dry the first time, so i would have to say it was operators error and not a wrong or defective part.

also if you used soapy water to install, the blades can stick, if not run afterwards.
