I have just purchased a craft with a 60ESL70D Johnson motor. It runs really nice, but it needs a service, and nobody can get me a manual for 2 weeks. It could also use a slight tuneup as I can smell an old gasoline smell around carbs, and it is a little lazy accelerating.
I was wondering if anyone here could tell me the ignition timing in degrees or in., what ign. gaps are, and what types of oil go in this unit.
Also as a quick aside, I have been told that this motor can be a voltage hog, and that it will blow the amplifier pack if voltage gets low. Is this true, and if it is, what is considered low voltage (12, 10, 9.5 )?
Thanks for any help

Re: 60hp 3 cyl Johnson

Dogger... From what you've said, I'd assume that the carburetors are fouled and will require removing, cleaning, and rebuilding.

I don't recall what the timing is on that 1970 60hp model. Hopefully someone else will jump in here with that info. The 1971 60hp, at full throttle sets at 22° but whether the 1970 model is the same , I don't remember.

I believe that model has ignition points. They should be set to .010. Check the setting on all three lobes as one may turn up whereas the setting would be too close. If one lobe turns up to be set at say .009 or less with the others at .010.... set the .009 to .010. Beter to have the others slightly wider.

You can use Champion L77V or UL77V surface gap plugs, or the alternative Champion electrode type plug L77JC4 or QL77JC4 set at .030 on that model. The "Q" indicates a resistor plug which helps quiet noise/interference on electronic equipment.

The lower unit is a Hydro Electric Shift type unit which is quite complex. Use what is called (OMC) "Premium Blend" lube, also known as "Type C".

The fuel mixture is 50/1 (1pt of 50/1 oil to 6gal 87 octane gas)

The powerpack on those Battery Capacitance Discharge (1968/72) ignition systems demand a perfect battery with at least a 70amp hour rating. Anything less will in time damage the powerpack.

The actual low voltage trouble mark is unknown. A perfect battery, reading over 12 volts, with poor connections will create a problem.
