60hp control cables

I recently purchased a set of new cables from Ebay UK for my Mercury 60hp when I went to fit them I found that the black plastic barrels on the cables at the engine end need to be moved further back on the cables as they wont fit the cable clamp assembly. I tried moving them but am unsure if they are supposed to slide and was worried about breaking them. Anyone know.
