60hp Evinrude too rich

My outboard is still not idling down. I have already replaced a fuel line that Ithought was causing the problem. My motor goes though a liter of oil per two hour outing. It goes fine at full throttle, but once set to idle (while in gear), It smokes like crazy, and shortly after stalls out. Anyone with any ideas please help.

Vic.... That sound like you have a fuel restriction, and in all probability it is being caused by an "Anti Siphon" valve that can be located where the rubber fuel hose attaches to the fitting on top of the built in tank. Those things are notorious for sticking, and before they get too badd, they will operate fairly well at a high rpm due to the fact that the vacuum being generated by the pump at the high rpm will keep the valve open. However, at the lower rpm, the vacuum is much less and the "Anti Siphon" valve sticks. This causes a fuel restriction BUT the VRO is still operating as it should, and as a result, less fuel gets drawn into the VRO but the normal amount of oil is being drawn in..... resulting in a very rich (oil) mixture.

The cure? Hey glad you asked! Remove that anti siphon valve if it exists. (Aluminum fitting about 2" long) and knock out ther inner componets (Spring, ball and ball seat), then re-install it as a straight through fitting. Hope that cures your problem.

Tee in a fitting on the inlet hose to the VRO and do a vacuum test while engine running. If the vacuum is more tha 5"HG, suspect a restriction as Joe Reeves says. (fuel filter, quick coupler, pinched hose, poor tank venting, anti-spill valve)(rather see you replace the anti-spill valve rather than modify it)

Thanks alot for the tip guys. After checking the fuel restriction, would you recommend disconecting the VRO all together. Save maintanence costs in the future. I've heard of them failing on people, with some harsh consequences.

One more thing..... There seems to still be a small amount of fuel-oil mixture, restings underneath the carbs, and all the way back. Sometimes when I start the motor up, I can see gas on the surface, quite a bit ...thanks

Best clean the area thoroughly and squeeze the primer ball until hard. Then inspect for leaks...
Some may disagree, but if you can't find an obvious reason for the oil useage, I'd either replace the VRO pump assmy. or block off the oil inlet, use it as a fuel pump, and premix my fuel....
