I have a 66 Johnson 60hp V-4 on my 15ft Steury. The motor seems to miss a little as I am leaving the dock but then quickly smooths out when throttled to planing speed. I have been afraid to throttle the control as far as it will go until the other day. When I did it seemed to flatten out a little at full rpms. I dont know how to explain it because it doesn't miss but gives the impression that it is about to be starved for fuel. If I back off a little it runs great with no issues. I'm clueless and don't want to kill this nice old motor. Also I am not used to two strokes of this size and there seems to be a funky rattly noise at planing speed but hard to tell over the spray of water and other noises. Any insight???

You need to start with some basic checks, compression, spark and fuel delivery. Has the engine been sitting for awhile? Sounds like you might have an engine miss since it seems to" miss a little ". May be time to overhaul the carb also. Start with the basic checks and see where that leeds you.

I am planning on getting a manual soon but with four kids I am really strapped at the moment. What should the compression be on each cylinder and how close to one another is OK. Thanks
