Hi,
I took my pontoon to the water today after a complete rebuild including the motor. (ob343140) 1988 merc 60 hp. I gave it a complete overhaul last winter, new pistons and rings, fuel pump, impeller, carb rebuild, starter gear, selenoid, new battery. It ran good on the stand but today was the first time on the water. It ran good and I was impressed with the way it handled the 20 foot pontoon. very agile. I did have some issues.
1. At higher rpms I got a warning buzzer and "over heat/low oil " light. I junked the autoblend and mixed the fuel 25:1 for break in. Is there anything I should have done after I removed the autoblend that would make it think it wasn't getting oil?
Also there was a good stream of water coming out so I know it was getting water through the block. I couldn't reach it to find out how hot it was but didn't see any steam. Shut it off when I heard the horn and started it back up and checked the pee stream and it looked good. Had my son watch when it sounded again and there was water coming out. My water pressure gage showed low pressure but I wonder if it isn't because the gromet where the pee comes out is missing and a 1/4 inch air fitting in its place is letting too much back pressure get away. I tried to get a new one and they are not available. Could the pressure gage be wired with the tach and sensing low pressure at higher rpm? The horn didn't come on till the rpm was close to 5000. I tried to keep the rpms low and varied them as per break in procedure. It seemed as though the prop was pitched to low as I could have easily got 5500 or more, if the tach is right.
2. I also could barely get it in reverse so I'm thinking I'll have to adjust the cable. If I held down on the shift lever I could get reverse but it couldn't have been completely engaged.
Other than that It handled the toon with the greatest of ease. Popped right up out of the water and got with it. That could be due to a low prop too.?
I know this is a lot to digest but if some one has any thoughts on any of the issues, please jump in. I'm at a loss about the warning horn. Thanks..................Jerry
