60hp warning horn???????????????????

Hi,
I have a 60hp merc that has been overhauled and has new

1 water pump complete
2 pistons and rings
3 fuel pump
The acublend was removed and gas mixed.
Problem................................
The warning horn is going off at high rpms and there is a good stream of water coming out the teletale. There is a lot of water spitting out the vents below the power head but doesn't appear to be steam, so I don't think it is getting hot. We ran it for four hours continuously with out a splutter. I took the warning horn off because I was getting tired of listening to it, and don't think it was hot or it wouldn't have survived four hours run time. Could it be a bad sensor, or is there something about the autoblend that should have been dealt with? Wait for opinions..................Jerry

Removing the oiler eliminated that as a possibility. The sensor is my bet.

With the engine off and cool, disconnect the tan overtemp wire (coming from the sensor) from the wiring harness and connect an ohmmeter between the tan wire and the engine block. You should read resistance....10 ohms, 50 ohms, 100 ohms, something like that. The lower the resistance the louder the horn.

You said you took the horn off. You didn't say you disconnected the sensor so in case you don't know where it is, it is imbeded in the water jacket cover somewhere around where the sparkplugs are located.

Thanks. I'll check that out. Yes I know where the sensor is. When I overhauled the motor I looked at that sensor wondering if I should replace it but thought I would try it first. It sqawked the first time in the water. I found it on mercury express this morning along with the teltale nozzle that used to be NA. I have an air fitting in it's place and it don't work as good as it shoots too big a stream and is hard to see among all the turbulance back there. I think the new nozzle will shoot a finer stream and I can direct it off to the side where I can see it. Maybe make my water pressure read up a little higher too. Thanks...................Jerry

Normal operation for the warning system is to squeak at ignition power on....tells you it is working.

The tell tale is usually 5/16 tubing teed off 3/8 tubing. Not a major player in determing pee pressure necessarily.

Hi,
The warning horn doesn't come on when I turn the ignition on. It occassionaly sounds at high rpms. I checked the olms and got 46.4 or somthing like that. (from the sender). The water pressure is not great and is a little dissapointing after installing a complete pump. Could be the gage or a leaky hose going to it. I seem to get a lot of water spluttering from the vents below the power head. Any thoughts on that?..........Jerry

There is a slim possibility of a split water pipe in the midsection. It's rare. If the water pump didn't drain and the pipe stayed full of water and froze, it'll split and not deliver full water to the powerhead. That's a REAL slim possibility! I'm more inclined to look for a blockage at the base of the powerhead where the water goes up into it.

OR...if the water pump impeller was cranked backwards into the housing, it won't pump full flow until all the vanes correct into the correct direction which might or might happen when running.

Re: 60hp warning horn???????????????????

I don't know the exact resistance required to activate an audible alarm. The lower the resistance the more the current and the louder the alarm. I'm almost deaf so it does me little good. My alarm doesn't squeak at power up like it's supposed to but it works cause it found my bad stat.

If it's activating at WOT you aren't getting enough water thru the engine for whatever (internal or external) reason.

Water out the vents depends upon engine design in the midsection. Some put out more than others. Usually a mist or nothing at idle. Some put out a nice easy constant stream at WOT. The vent is for exhaust relief at startup and during trolling. Water exiting is consequential and is part of the normal exhaust gasses. Most goes thru the prop hub.
